Most tyre sidewalls are covered with words and symbols, the most
obvious being the manufacturers name and the tyre model.
The
most important information however, is the width/aspect ratio,
structure, diameter, weight and speed marking.
We'll use 185/60 R14 82 V as an example here.
185
= the WIDTH of the tyre section in millimetres
60 = ASPECT ratio percentage between the height
and width of the tyre section
R = the structure of tyre (R = radial)
14 = internal diameter inches of the wheel RIM on
which the tyre will be fitted
82 = load bearing capacity i.e. the maximum weight the
tyre is certified to carry
V = SPEED rating i.e. maximum speed at which the
tyre can be used
